The Reluctant Gourmet



In 1980, a group of restaurateurs approached the Mayor of Chicago with the idea of a food festival on the Fourth of July. The existence of this basic taste is still debated by some in the food industry, as some taste experts claim it to be a combination some or all of the the original four basic tastes. Smells also seem to come from the world taste mouth, even though there are no cells there responsible for detecting scents.

Fat plays a huge role in how food tastes when it's cooked. Salty is the taste of sodium and chloride (salt crystals) and the mineral salts potassium and magnesium. Food containing table salt is mainly what we taste as salty. There are about 12. Each one can have thousands of bitter-sensitive taste buds.

Something you try today and may not like, try using it again in a few months and you might really like it. Your taste buds will change when you cook without salt. What's neat about taste buds is that not every cell responds to the same taste stimuli. The subjects were given cherry-flavored drinks that differed in sweetness and the amount of red coloring.

Only after taste is combined with smell is a food's flavor produced. Because of dogs' dislike of bitter tastes, various sprays, and gels have been designed to keep dogs from chewing on furniture or other objects. In fact, most people would describe the "taste" of wedding cake to be sweet with hints of these odors when, in fact, those are the scents that combine with our taste qualities to create the flavor experience.
